Preparing MP4 Files for “Fast Start” Streaming on the Internet
This uses the procedure given by Serif's Jon White in this Serif Forum thread:
http://forums.serif.com/showthread.php?p=831610#post831610
The qt-faststart.exe tool will prepare the .mp4 file for streaming, without re-encoding the video or reducing its quality. But it is a "command-line tool" so has to be used in a Windows Command Prompt window.
Note. It does not matter whether the original video was encoded using one, or two passes.
Preparation:
- Download the qt-faststart.zip file from the link given by Serif's Jon White: http://multimedia.cx/eggs/improving-qt-faststart/
- Extract the qt-faststart.exe file from this Zip archive, using the normal Windows tool.
- Copy this qt-faststart.exe to a new folder on the C: drive. (I do not like to put unknown files in the root of the C: drive, so I created a new folder c:\mp4-fix)
- Open a Windows Command Prompt
- Type cd c:\mp4-fix
- Click Return key
The Prompt should now change to show that you have changed to this new folder. (The cd command = change directory)
Test:
- Type qt-faststart
- Click Return key
You should now see brief instructions on how to use the QT-FastStart utility.
